Not “Are You Afraid of the Dark Part 3”?!
Don’t worry. There will be more installments. I need some more time to feel ready to share more chapters of my life (that part at least). I appreciate your patience, friends.
Abstract metaphor & inspiration
As a songwriter, I find myself wanting to dive deeper and deeper with each passing day. This past year especially has lit a fire in me to write about all of the good, bad and the ugly. It can be challenging at times to be authentic, while not exposing some of the heavier parts of life, for fear of hurting those who have been the catalyst for a song. And, in some cases, for fear of exposing my inner workings to the world.
I’ve written many songs I may never share…that I simply needed to put down on paper and add music to heal my soul. There are songs I have shared but have never given a glimpse into its inspiration, or perhaps told some of the story - but not the whole story.
There are songs I have written that have flown out of me with a clear influence, only to morph into what I needed the lyrics to be through time. There are stream of consciousness sessions I’ve done where I am taken aback by what I am reading, shedding light on the backroads of my mind.
And then there is the muse. I find it to be ever-present, and in it, a river of comfort and answers. It is a salve for my soul. It is a beautiful wonder that I give thanks to daily.
All I can say is, thank goodness for metaphor.
If I’m being honest, I can’t remember the initial inspiration behind “Troublesome Creek.” But the thing about this song is that it has been one of my “morph over time” songs.
I turn to these lyrics when I’m lost in the woods of life. I find new answers that spur new questions. Because with curiosity, the well of inspiration will never dry up.
I could add a new verse with each passing day. And maybe today is the day I’ll start.
Troublesome Creek
Finding trouble in troublesome creek
Finding trouble in troublesome creek
Nowhere else to go - no other street
Finding trouble in troublesome creek
Clearing paths through corn and wheat
Clearing paths through corn and wheat
You won’t be waiting - won’t hold my breath
‘Cause I’m finding trouble in troublesome creek
I heard you singing a new song
I heard you singing a new song
You won’t be waiting - won’t hold my breath
Finding trouble in troublesome creek
Sharing Time
I’d like to share a song I wrote with you all, titled, “Troublesome Creek.” It’s from my debut album, “Sweet Beginnings.” It features Seth Hedquist on slide electric guitar, as well as Stephy Graham on upright bass and Bryan Vanderpool on shaker.
I can’t wait to share the back story to more of my songs with all of you, as well as my journey in music and life. Until next time.
See you in a week
If you’re reading this, thank you. I’m honored. And I can’t wait to continue on this journey via Substack with all of you! We’ll see what next Sunday brings.
